Would you rather be ice shavings or mince meat?

That EVERYDAY HAPPY book, which I mentioned in my last post, says that on DAY 5 (today) I should reach out and make contact with someone whom I have not spoken with for a while -- perhaps a former beloved co-worker who I don't see very often, or a once dear friend who was relocated.

I'm wondering if I could bend the rules and simply make contact with an iron fist on someone who I usually see 5 days a week, because said person causes my blood pressure to rise almost every day I see said person, and clocking said person one good time, would immediately relieve some of my angst, so much more than would calling someone whom I have not spoken with in a while.  Besides I doubt my chosen friend, would enjoy hearing me vent loudly in his or her ear after not having heard from me in so long.  Oh wait, I could call my friend in New Orleans.  He likes it when I curse.

Fortunately for said annoying and perpetual procrastinating person and any one of my unintentionally neglected friends (and probably me, cuz I'm not the prison type), I simply gazed longingly at the heavy duty three hole punch as I passed it on my way to the kitchen where I instead took out my fury on chunks of ice which should be cubed.  Ahhh ... destruction by ice scoop.  What a cool and refreshing ANGST relief activity!

I feel better now.  Maybe not happy as a blue bird, but better.  Maybe later I will call one of my unintentionally neglected out of state friends.  Who knows, happy may be within today's reach after all.

I'm not crazy or dangerous.  Really.  I'm just helping my blood pressure return to normal by venting my residual annoyance.

  1. Patience, Grasshopper! Now I'm not one known for following the rules, but in this this case it seems like a good idea. Follow the steps as outlined and maybe down the line there will be a step that will give you suggestions on how to maim or hide the bodies of those who get on your nerves, thus adding to your happiness.

  4. @Coffeypot -- I may be a laggard, but I am finally getting on board with Day 5's intended direction.

@DKC -- Yep, friends are the best!

@Alice -- I'm often happily thinking of making contact with you!

  5. OH! Hahahahahaha I used to tell Jay that he looked like the Reno 911 cop with the thick porno style moustache. The Guru favors them both. Thanks for the laugh.

  6. I have a feeling clocking that person would go against what your book is advising, in the end! I once heard a preacher say, "Resentment is setting myself on fire in the hopes that the smoke will bother you." I think the same of anger and actually, any other negative emotion we feel toward people. They win when they get the ability to take over our emotions and effect our happiness. That's my take on it, anyway.

  7. I had a GF once that had not read that book. We were at a pub one night, and she looks across the bar, and says oh that's so and so, I hate that person so much. She picked up her glass, chucked it clear across the bar, and nailed the other person straight in the head. I took her by the hand and said it was time to go. We later found out that the person was fine, but bewildered as to why she got hit in the head with a glass.

  8. @Stephanie -- You and that preacher are absolutely right. That's why I don't physically smack anyone. Instead I blog my mean side out. Even though I now know from my recent intense research on Happiness, that my opinion that VENTING anger is healthy, is WRONG. Research shows that giving less attention to our angst actually makes us feel better.

@Jay -- Wow! I hope your former GF has since learned how to better manage her negative feelings. I had a chick smack me once because her "soon to be former husband" was talking to me in a club. He had just starting talking to me at a club, and I had no clue he was married or that his soon to be ex was making a bee line for my face. I always wondered why she didn't smack him instead. Because, for good grief, I was actually innocent of any wrong doing.

  9. I'm glad that with that wee bit of anger... you weren't shaving your legs.

I think I would have turned to the freezer, ignored the ice, and taking my frustrations out by eating way too much ice cream.
