On the back side of life

Things get harder.  A lot harder.  Or maybe for some folks life gets easier.  Not everyone has an easy childhood or early adulthood.  My childhood wasn't free of hardships, but it wasn't unbearable.  Well, that one episode of childhood asthma was borderline unbearable.  It tried to finish me off early.   I'm sometimes mad that it didn't.  Yeah yeah, save your Polly Anna preachy speech for someone else.  I'm still grieving my mother.  And grieving people talk smack like that.

This all brings me to a text I got this morning from a self professed crappy friend of mine.  I didn't call her a crappy friend, she did before informing me that she had been unjustly terminated from her job.  I have no doubt that it was an unjust termination, because she's a person of good character.  I can only surmise why she put herself into the crappy friend category.  She's been mostly MIA since my mother died.  But, that really has been okay with me.  I would not have wished me on anyone over the past two years.  I've been sad and down on life in general, including all of humanity.  That's what grief does to some people.  People like me who already had a dim view of humanity's claim to greatness.  So anyways, my friend lost her job.  She's older and closer to retirement than I am, but not close enough to rest easy without a job.  Seriously, do troubles never cease?  That's not a real question.  It's a lament.  And lately, I'm a champion at lamenting.

Should I reach out to her during her current time of trouble? Or should I just wait for her to get a new job and feel better about life?  That's not really a question either.  I know what I'm supposed to do, because I was born to do the "right thing," and if I were in doubt the following breakdown on being a friend which I read last week is mighty clear on the subject:

  1. A friend has got to do what a friends gotta do. But with your feelings of grief, don't let it be 'the blind leading the blind' sorta thing. Just swap a glass or two and laugh as much as you can. That is what friends do... imho.

    1. Your humble opinion is always appreciated. Festivities soon to begin. I invited her to dinner.
