Take a picture, it'll last longer.

Have you ever noticed someone openly staring at you?  What do you do?  Stare back?  Avert your eyes?  Smile, look away, and hope they stop staring?

During a short conference with three clients, one of them, a young woman somewhere around the age of 19 or so,  kept staring at me.  She wasn't just watching me as would anyone during a mutual discussion, she was intently watching me.  I smiled and looked away, but I could feel her eyes fixed upon me, practically searing a hole through me.  I became slightly uncomfortable, but remained perfectly poised.  However, on the inside, she was starting to freak me out just a little.  I couldn't help but to  wonder what she was thinking as she stared.  I had not eaten, so I knew I didn't have any spinach caught in my teeth.  And, I was fairly certain that I had not sprouted horns overnight.  I was even having a good hair day and behaving myself.

I'm not normally paranoid, but I got to wondering if she was a member of some freaky cult or something.  Granted, my life isn't scintillating in the least, but my mother would miss me terribly, if I became a burnt offering.

I'm really curious as to why being stared at causes feelings of discomfort and suspicion/paranoia.  I'm guessing humans went for a long time feeling like everyday prey, so this must be a prehistoric leftover.

  1. She had a crush on you! Testing to see if you would return the attention, thereby identifying yourself as a member of the same sex club. Don't ask me how I know this, I really don't! Except that I have lots of gay friends and the women, especially, they do different things to "feel" you out before embarrassing themselves.

  2. @Nikki -- No offense to the same sex club, but I am not a member. As most women, I have become accustomed to noted looks from men. But, I haven't learned the tell tale sign of that sort of womanly attention. I would think 19 a bit young for such aggression. But hey, what do I know about today's 19 year old chick?

  3. Maybe she thought you are hot (you are, too) and wanted to tie you on like an oatbag to a horse.

I would just stare back and make a contest to see who would blink first.

    Or maybe she is blind.

Hmm.. isn't 19 about the time you women "experiment" with... things?
