A plethora of boring daily news

I had a lovely weekend, I hope yall did as well.  I missed out on the hidden treasure, but at least I had fun trying ;)    Maybe I will have better luck next time.  Not that I really need to find the treasure, its just something fun to pursue while being outdoors.

On Saturday I was up and out early ... only because my mother called and invited me to breakfast.  We ate at a local joint, called The Quickie, which has absolutely no atmosphere and the most basic of food.  The fact that The Quickie is lacking in atmosphere actually appeals to me.  I hate fru fru ... uptight ... mind your manners restaurants.  As long as the "vibe" is good and the food is decent, I am way happier than with fantabulous food surrounded by pomp and circumstance.

After breakfast, we drove to a neighboring town about 45 minutes away.  My mother has been shopping for new furniture, and had not found any in our city that she liked, so we were off and under a time crunch because the neighboring town's furniture store closes at 2:00 on Saturdays.  I called them and was like FOR REALS 2:00 p.m., not 2:00 a.m.????  And they were like YES, FOR REALS 2:00 p.m.!   Is it me that thinks Saturday would be the one day a furniture store would stay open to at least 5:00 or 6:00 p.m.?  No matter how small the town?  Whatever, we got there at 12:30 and by 2:00 p.m. my mother had selected a sofa, two chairs and a lamp, chose different fabric and paid those early birds.  The new furniture will be ready in about a month.  Look out next holiday ... we are getting our additional family seating ON!

After the furniture store, we went to check out the smaller town's downtown and found a promising antique store.  I'm always looking for things that I don't collect.  Like those unique owls, vintage metal thermoses and books.  I have been looking for a mantle clock, and found one that I actually like (a feat).  The clock maker is Gilbert, a company I was not familiar with, and the price was a little heftier than I had in mind, so I am keeping it on the MAYBE I WANT that list.  Another item, a white vase with an anchor in a rope circle on its side, was the only other thing to catch my eye.  It was marked Roseville, but it didn't look like any Roseville pattern I had ever seen, so I was slightly suspicious.  I didn't buy the vase either, but I googled them both when I got home, and they remain on the MAYBE I WANT THAT list.   I'm a slooooooooooow decider about most things, and decorative objects are no exception.  I'm very choosy (choosy can also be spelled choosey -- but I chose not to), even though some might not think so.

After antique shopping, my mother who has resisted the onset of diabetes since recently being told that she was borderline diabetic, spied a place called Three Crazy Bakers.  My mother, who is now the size of a bird, because the thought of being borderline diabetic scared the beejeebees (although as you will see not the sweets compulsion) out of her, had cupcake on the brain.  My mother has made a huge lifestyle change.  She no longer eats tons of sweets and carbs, but she will indulge now and then, and I could feel the presence of the word CUPCAKE radiating from the forefront of her brain, even though she never said that was what was on her mind.  She was disappointed to learn the Three Crazy Bakers only had brownies, cookies, cinnamon buns and lunch stuff.  Containing her disappointment, we had lunch there ... burgers to be exact... and supposedly the best burger in town ... but I have no way to verify their claim as I have not yet eaten anywhere else in their town.  I will say this, they have NOTHING on the burger at The Paradise Grill in Warm Springs, Georgia, which can make me drool at the very thought of their juicy burgers when I am experiencing "I gotta have beef" days.  After leaving Three Crazy Bakers, we rounded the corner and SMACK there was another bake shop, the name of which escapes me.  I parked, she hopped out and came back ... happy ... with a delicious looking (that's right, A ... not two, just A) delicious looking cupcake that was wrapped in cellophane with a sweet blue bow.  She let me have a taste of the homemade chocolate butter frosting.  Don't feel bad for me, I forgot to mention that after lunch, I bought a mini cinnamon bun for dessert from those Three Crazy Bakers.

We returned home, and you know mostly how Sunday went, cuz I blogged about that yesterday.  What you don't know is that when I went out on Sunday to pick up lunch from a local casual eatery ... that my car would not start when I got back in it.  Great, just great.  I had to call my brother, because my father was in church.  My brother came, but didn't have the tools to even try to fix it, so he and my sweet tyke of a nephew gave me a ride home.  It's always nice to spend time with my brother and he had things he wanted to chat about, so I enjoyed seeing him.  My father came later and we went back to the restaurant to try our luck with the car.  We knew the non starting problem wasn't the battery because it's new and because it wasn't even trying to start.  About the time my father was about to hook his little test gadget to my car, a guy who is probably in his mid to late 20s came along and practically insisted on helping.  Between the two of them, they didn't solve whatever the problem was, but they did use a screwdriver to make a connection which allowed the car to start (hmmmm ... I wonder if those two were car thieves in a past life).  When we got back to my house, my father diagnosed the problem as a fluke, but for me to call him if it did it again.  What???  A fluke?  Ummm ... okay (eyeroll)... but that diagnosis doesn't make me feel very good about driving anywhere beyond the borders of our city.  It has been a whole day since left stranded, and I have been places without further incidence, so I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope for the best ... right after I call Triple A.

  1. I am actually waiting for my car to die. That way when I call triple A, they can replace the battery AND cart the old one away. I know I could replace the battery myself but what do I do with the old one? Triple A knows what to do!

Speaking of cupcakes. I just ordered an icecream cake for my mother's bday which is tomorrow... and I noticed they had cupcakes which they never had before so I took a look. ICE CREAM CUPCAKES?!!!! They looked like normal cupcakes, just a bit bigger and it had ice cream in the middle. HOW DO THEY DO THAT?!

  2. A fluke huh. Sounds like the starter has a bad spot on it - its cylindrical and if it ends up in the bad spot (electrically disconnected) after spinning and hopefully starting the engine, your trouble will happen again. They used to temporarily get cars started by banging on the starter casing with a hammer which shook the thing out of the bad spot.

So .. no verdict, updates, prognosis with the lawn????
