Havana, Florida

You know when you have a vision in mind of a place you plan to visit, but have never been before, and how its reality is sometimes bigger than any vision you could ever imagine?

Well, that didn't happen when I visited Havana, Florida, yesterday.  There were only three things that were appealing to me about Havana, the first being its name.  For me, Havana conjures up visions of flamenco dancing and beautiful men in stylish fedoras.  Yeah well, a girl can dream can't she?

The second appeal being the victorian styled cottage "Weezie's Cottage Living" was located in.  I don't love victorian style, but I do love old houses, and would you just take a look at Weezie's center hall, which offers a view from back to front and creates the most delicious breezeway.

Ahhh, my favorite southern architectural feature working at its finest.  Along with that dark wood ceiling and curved center arch, it looked like the perfect place one could escape brutal southern summer heat.  A swinging daybed was the only thing missing.

Since the third appeal for the day was the perfect weather, I got over the fact that I could not take a snooze in Weezie's hallway.  When I realized the bedrooms each had a door which opened onto the wrap around porch, I was then having visions of a new old house to call my own.

After leaving this wish inducing structure, we decided to move on and mark this little town off our destination list.  Been there, didn't do much.

I'm back to my own old house with a center hall that runs into my bedroom which is screaming for attention.  My car is begging for a scrub and rub.  My dust bunnies are hoping for a game of chase.  I, on the other hand, am busy having visions of Beaufort, South Carolina, which is soon to welcome her arms to the vacationing likes of me.

Crap, I promised myself that the month of October would be dedicated to my favorite childhood holiday Halloween, and this post decided to deviate from the misson.  Hmmm ... what to do, what to do ...

BOO!!!!

Whatever, that's the best I could do.

  1. I love the old homes in Beaufort (old homes in general.) You will enjoy that city. And the old homes have to be haunted - to keep up with your Halloween theme.

Unfortunately, except for some of the housing styles, there is nothing about Havana that interest me. I would never go there just because of the name. Now if there was a prostitute convention being held there with plenty of free samples, I might reconsider.

  2. @Coffeypot -- I LOVE LOVE LOVE Beaufort. I have been there at least 4 times in my life, and every time I go, I remember HOW much I love it. It is a feast for the eyes!

As for Havana, I went there mostly, because of the reported "antique" stores. Let's just say, that the only antiques I liked in their town was the antique houses.

  3. Beaufort... I've been to one of them - not sure if it was the one in South or North Carolina... I get confused easily. :)

I was on a house tour this weekend - You might of liked a couple of the places I was in...

Is Chestertown, Maryland "south" enough? Its south of the Mason-Dixon line...

  4. @Iggy -- If you've been to Beaufort, SC, I can't imagine that you would confuse it with any other place on earth, but I could be wrong, cuz I have never been to Beaufort, NC.

Beaufort, SC is where they filmed The Great Santini, Forrest Gump, The Big Chill and The Prince of Tides, to name a few. The low country is simply stunning!

As for Maryland. I've been above the Mason-Dixon line, but I've never been to Maryland.
